Presentation Reaction

After giving my presentation in class, I do feel a lot better about the inquiry project and which direction I am heading.  I have decided to still focus on sarcasm in language, and look at how it affects males and females differently.  I am still not sure on what I want my exact argument to be, but I am researching on how sarcasm doesn’t affect males as much as females.  I have found some studies and good information on this subject, and hope I can pull it all in together.  I am still open to any new suggestions or ideas that anyone has.

Inquiry Blog Post 2

-This website talks about sarcasm in language, and when it was first used.

-This website just defines what sarcasm is, and how it is related to language/literature.

-This website was very interesting, and talked about sarcasm in different cultures.  It even relates sarcasm to a part of the brain.

-This website talks about sarcasm in relationships, and the different types of sarcasm.  It shows studies that have been done between males and females about their relationships with sarcasm.

-This website is an overview of a book that relates to sarcasm.

Inquiry Question Assignment

For my inquiry question, I want to write about how sarcasm can play such a big role in language, and also how sarcasm can be interpreted in different ways. I have chosen to talk about this because I am a very sarcastic person, and I use sarcasm in my everyday language.  I also see the use of sarcasm in my everyday life, whether it is through text messages, the television, or the internet.  I wouldn’t say I have much “fact” knowledge about the subject, but I do have some personal experience.  I have been in the room when the use of sarcasm has made someone laugh, get angry, and even cry.  I have also used the sarcastic text messages, and have seen the sarcastic commercials and television shows.

I am very interested in this topic because like I said I am such a sarcastic person, and I can relate to the use of sarcasm.  Saying that, I think I know a little about the topic of sarcasm, but I would like to learn a lot more.  I would like to learn more about the roots of sarcasm, and if it actually is considered a type of language.  I also would like to learn if there are different types or forms of sarcasm, and what role they play in today’s language.   To find this information I plan on using the internet, and searching various informational sites to get the facts.  I also plan on talking to my peers about the use of sarcasm in their everyday lives to gain a better unbiased understanding.

I came up with this area of focus because I think that it is something that goes overlooked when talking about language, especially in the times we are living in today.  If you don’t have somewhat of an understanding about sarcasm, then you probably wouldn’t understand half the commercials or shows on television.  I think it is very important to understand not just sarcasm, but all different types and forms of language.

The angle I am wanting to look at for my topic is how sarcasm can be interpreted when used in different forms of communication.  I want to look at different forms of text messages, letters, emails, and then of course actual speaking.  I know from personal experience how different something can sound coming from someone’s voice, and then reading it from your phone or computer.  I also want to look at the different meaning of words when used in different forms of communication.  For example, how saying one word over a text message can have a whole different vibe and meaning than if you said that word in person.

I hope while doing this project that I gain a more understanding of sarcasm, and where it comes from.  I want to understand different people’s views of sarcasm, and how they use and see it.  By the end, I want to be able to answer my inquiry question, and explain it to all.

How can sarcasm be interpreted in different forms of communication?
